As a fan of Dickens this is a dislocated version of one of the greatest stories he ever wrote. This is billed as a comedy drama but there is nothing of either. It just looks like the producers were trying to include as many different ethnic actors as possible without bothering about the quality of the story line.

This film to date is not available in my area and I would love to see it. I am in Rhode Island USA. Mr. Patel I enjoy your work. However, the vast majority of the film's highlights were in the (oft repeated) trailer. Worth a watch but not one of the year's best, unfortunately. I like Dev Patel, but all this diversity, taking over classic British stories, even DrWho arting to annoy i want Bollywood, i'll subscribe to it.

My expectations were not high, but this film was most enjoyable. I felt that they had really captured the spirit (including the humour) of the novel. I thought it was also very courageous as they would inevitably get a lot of complaints about race etc (as you can see from the comments here) especially if they had made a poor film. As it was, they made an excellent film with excellent actors. Personally I wasn't bothered by the colour blind casting at all. Its an adaptation of the novel into a different medium and the whole thing has a slightly fairy tale quality about it: it isn't meant to be particularly realistic or a documentary. Also, there's been plenty of Macbeth set in an African tribe, Lear set in random fascist dictatorships, Romeo and Juliet set in 20th century America etc etc, and people don't keep whinging about it not being Elizabethan England.

I love him. Nice noticing of the music. It was incredibly Britten/ Vaughn-Williamsy. I thought it added an epic grandiosity to the film, while staying true to the Englishness of its narrative. Every aspect of this film was beautifully put together.

Not Funny at all. David copperfield was black. Will Barkis be willing. David Copperfield is probably my favourite Dickens novel, but at nearly 700 pages, there is no way the full and original story could have been kept. However, although I did really enjoy the film, in order to do so I had to forget the book and just take this interpretation at face value. One of the recurring motifs in the film is a small box in which David keeps scraps of paper on which he's written memorable phrases, and I felt that was almost symbolic of the screenplay - it was as though they'd torn Dickens' original into pieces, and put a select few back together but in the wrong order and minus several key events and characters. Having said all that, I'm a big fan of Iannucci, and believe Malcolm Tucker to be one of the greatest comic characters of all time. Given the two hour time restraint, Armando therefore came up with something highly original and stuffed full of brilliant comic moments, and Peter Capaldi made the transformation from Tucker to Micawber seamless! As for Hugh Laurie, the man is a comic genius, and his Mr Dick was superlative. Oh, and I thoroughly agree with Mark Kermode - Dev Patel has the comic timing and instinct of Chaplin at his best.

Dev Patel grinning, goofily, through everything he does again. Outstanding story 🤔🤔🤔🤔. Amongst a very strong cast, Hugh Laurie was absolutely wonderful in this! I dont know if its choice to not take on that many film roles nowadays but he struck that blend between drama and comedy hes always been so adept at from the early days perfectly.
